SP College organises Extension Lecture Series during World Environment Week (WED-2021)

Srinagar: To mark the celebration of World Environment Week (WED-2021) themed ‘Ecosystem Restoration’, the UG and PG departments of Environmental Sciences, S.P. College, Srinagar organized Extension Lecture series.
During the proceedings, a third session of invited talks of celebrations was marked by an online invited talk on ‘Ecosystem Degradation, Climate Change and Animal Health’ by Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Biosciences, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.
He discussed in length about the multiple factors, such as, impact of different types of pollution on various ecosystems, population explosion and water scarcity, anthropogenic activities, deforestation and CO2 emissions, consequences of climate change on ecosystem stability including animal health.
He highlighted the globalisation, urbanisation, climate change, natural disasters, and armed conflicts as main areas of concern for ecosystem degradation and various mitigation strategies were suggested thereof.
The program was live streamed on digital platforms and was attended by more than 100 participants from various colleges of Kashmir.
The Head Department of Environment and Water Management, who was also the coordinator of the program, Dr. Humaira Qadri stressed upon the importance of awareness lectures and programs in sensitisation of the young generation for conservation of the natural resources and ensured that the college shall be continuing with these awareness series to mark the environmental week rather environmental year.
In an earlier lecture delivered by Dr. Rinku Verma on ‘COVID 19 pandemic and ecosystem restoration’ on 7th of June, 2021, the speaker highlighted the herbal remedies for COVID-19.
The Principal of the College, Dr. Khursheed Ahmad Khan, stressed on the importance of ecosystem restoration for a better and brighter future and suggested that students can make a huge difference in making the conservation programs a success.
