Municipal dumping wastes pose a severe threat to hapless populations in B’Pora
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterWhatsappTelegramEmail
Bandipora/Feb,21 : Municipal Council Bandipora which in official records is possessing few kanals of  land for garbage dumping but the ground reality is quite contradictory.
Allegations are galore that in the recent years the Bandipora Municipal Council has encroached upon near about 200 Kanals of land in the vicinity of Bandipora town on the banks of  famous Wular lake. “The dumping of garbage over such area in open is not only threat to human life but may seriously harm  the aquatic life of wular lake”.  The Bandipora Munacipal Council administers 17 wards which on daily basis  excrete  round 50 tonnes of garbage and other wastes which is being dumped in open. The Zalwan which was once used for sports activities is now being used by the said council for garbage dumping. The foul smell coming from the said garbage expands to about two kilometer radius distance and the breakout of some deadly communicable diseases with the onset of summer can not be ruled out.
The famous Wular lake has been  encroached upon from all sides and this ever increasing encroachment around the Wular lake is killing the beauty of this notable destination . Locals said they have made umpteen representations for construction of sewage plant but nothing was materialised. Sources said besides getting approval for construction of waste disposal plant in area Municipal council Bandipora has totally failed to construct the plant and the situation is getting worse with each passing day.
Municipal Council have funds allocation of worth crores from State as well as Central sector but it has failed to provide better services to public in all walks of life whether it is street lighting or proper drainage system.Blaming the authorities Municipal Council is turning a blind eye to the prevailing conditions.Municipal authorities have not taken any action to put an end to this mess.
In every field Municipal Council is playing hide and seek game with their duties . Once there was a time when Bandipora Municiplity was managing the traffic but now they have forgotten their prime duties as resultantly hundreds of vehicles get stranded in the market .Now it is only by the virtue of locals and Police department that such a problem has been neutralised to a large extent.
The Street lights are not functioning properly during night hours which gives easy chance to robbers to loot the assets of shopkeepers. Even the senior officers are in a hurry to get transferred as soon as possible and are showing dis-interest in  performing their duties which results in the faliure of the system. Unfortunately even the District administration is acting as mere mute spectator with regard to the duties of Officers/Officials of Bandipora municipality.
One local namely Irshad Ahmad Dar of Nusoo said “since  my childhood Municipal Council has been talking about construction of Sewage plant for dumping purpose but till date I am 33 years old and  it appears only on papers but nothing has been done on ground level” .He further said that the Municiplity is definitely playing with the health of common man because of delay in construction of sewage plant.
Similarly the condition of Bandipora Srinagar road is worse .It gets very difficult for the travelers in general and the patients in particular to reach Srinagar in late hours apart from their timely return. The bad condition of the road results in enormous wastage of time ,money and energy. Kashmir Horizon has been carrying this news for years now but it seems that the district administration is in deep slumber and does not bother to address  this important public concern . When contacted Chief Executive Officer Municipal Council Bandipora Wali Mohammad said “the entire system which comes under the jurisdiction of the  Municipal Council Bandipora will be put on track incoming days”.
