Jammu: Directorate of School Education Jammu, Monday organised an orientation session on World Braille Day to sensitize the students, educators and other stakeholders about the needs and possible ways to reach out to visually impaired children.
Director School Education Jammu, Anuradha Gupta, in her message emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown had thrown up several new challenges for visually impaired children as they relied heavily on the use of ‘touch and hearing’ to communicate their needs and access information. “So, it was only prudent to produce essential information in accessible formats, including Braille and audible formats. She assured that every possible step would be taken to meet the needs of specially abled children”, she added.
Special Educator, Anita Kumari, who was the guest speaker, highlighted the importance of Braille as a medium of communication for visually impaired persons. She said that Braille literacy was an important factor determining equal opportunities for people with blindness. She shared many tips for educators who are dealing with such children, based on her own experience in the field.
The programme was moderated by Alka Sharma and coordinated by Surjit Singh, Head Cultural and Education Cell DSEJ, Ashutosh Sharma and Sadakat Ali, members Cultural and Education Cell DSEJ.
