Though no tinkering with the ballot in the just concluded DDC elections by the Governments in Jammu & Kashmir and New Delhi had brought respite to the people of Jammu & Kashmir but a political package of horse trading by the Government in Delhi for it’s selected people in Kashmir not only for roping in independent victorious DDC members but also for engineering defections in other parties is reminding people of the 1987 rigging and 1984 political coup against the then Farooq Abdullah led National Conference government of the erstwhile Jammu & Kashmir state. The four party alliance called “ Gupkar Gang” by the top BJP leaders including some senior Union Ministers has won a huge public mandate but the defeated are taking sadistic pleasure even in their outright rejection by the people both in Kashmir and as well as Jammu region. The defeated who have virtually become the selected are not new to mainstream politics in Jammu & Kashmir as they claim to be but have been in fact the architects, sponsors and beneficiaries of 1984 political coup against erstwhile Farooq Abdullah Government and 1987 election rigging. Those staying away from defections after the 1984 political coup against the erstwhile Farooq Abdullah led National Conference Government and 1987 election rigging have regained the lost ground in their own constituencies because of maintaining their individual identities but those not giving up defections since 1984 political coup against the erstwhile Farooq Abdullah government and 1987 rigging found their sponsors loosing badly the contests for DDC seats in the maiden DDC elections this month .

The claimants of truthful politics and democracy at grass roots have stooped down so low that because of their conduct the name of a credible law enforcing institution like J&K Police has been dragged into a latest controversy over defections and horse trading of the newly elected independent DDC members and victorious DDC members of the parties who are part of Peoples’ Alliance For Gupkar Declaration.

Let people keep it in mind that one DDC seat is just one half or one third of the assembly constituency. So those who found their sponsors loosing DDC seats just a part of their assembly constituencies can’t themselves think of wining assembly seats next time. The central government’s clout to sponsors of horse trading is rubbing off all the good impression generated by the smooth conduct of DDC elections and generating a very bad opinion about the role of the central government in the institutional foundation of the district development councils (DDCs) in Jammu & Kashmir. Under no circumstances the defections of DDC members can’t change the spirit of the public mandate delivered in the DDC elections which has endorsed the agenda of the Peoples Alliance For Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) that opposes the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019 and abrogation of special status.
