An addiction is a desire when a body or mind needs to do something that is hard to control or stop rather it’s irresistible or uncontrollable behaviour that leads to adverse effects. It would not be wrong to say that we are becoming slaves to technology. Now a days remaining in deep touch with social media has left its adverse impact on our lives & we are becoming addicted. Social media addiction is as compulsive as drug taking. It is actually spending too much time by using face book, twitter, instagram, snapchat, whatsapp and other applications so that it effects or obstructs other aspects of human life. There is actually nothing wrong with social media use, but the probelm comes when someone becomes addicted to it and overspends their precious time on these platforms to gain pleasure & consequently affects his/her life. In these times checking updates and scrolling through social media has became a trend particularly for teenagers and students who are more fascinated over social media, as they think their profiles really depict how they appear to others which means more likes and followers they have. Facebook is the biggest social media platform. It has been found that it has approximately 1.13 billion active users and more importantly according to it’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg an average people would spend fifty minutes a day on FB. Spending fifty minutes a day on Fb is obviously a time consuming activity which has it’s adverse affects. Moreover, one couldn’t deny the misuse of social media by our students which has it’s impacts on academic performances & hampers students productivity, concentration, emotional well being, mental I.Q and other health related issues like eye strain, stress, lack of sleep and depression. Social Media can have a negative impact on our relationships also especially when we will talk of families or couples.
If we could use the social media smartly and correctly without being addictive, having social websites will become a good change for us in future.
As family time is very important to keep the experiences, love and connection together. It can also cause infidelity or adultery as many couples are caught cheating their partners through social media. This will make fights between couples or even lead the situation towards divorce. The adverse impact of social media addiction can be powerful on society in both positive and negative terms. It is harmful when people spread rumours, and false information without verifying the content. Online harrasment or cyber bullying is commonly seen a problem for young people. Adults may also bully each other online and use offensive words or comments and who are victims of bullying experience stress and depression. Last but not least social media can be an important tool if used correctly. It is compulsory to know social media addiction before the situation worsens. Social media is and will persue to be harmful and addictive unless something is done about it. Therefore before you spend hours on these platforms, rather try to indulge urself to other essential things in your lives. Delete all notifications, and unplugg yourself. Spend time with family and friends and live happily. If we could use the social media smartly and correctly without being addictive, having social websites will become a good change for us in future.

Syed Gh Rasool Gayoor: An Epitome of Integrity
S G M Andrabi
October 22 this year marked the 14 death anniversary of Jenab Syed Ghulam Rasool Gayoor (Ratinpori). Born on 22nd August 1942 at Ratnipora Pulwama, the educator, philanthropist & political activist, fell to the bullets of his assassinators on 17th of Ramadan when he too was keeping fast. In last 31 years of blood soaked era, he was one among those over a dozen people of high professional integrity who fell to the bullet just for speaking out of their own conscience and didn’t subscribe to a particular political narrative.
Nisar main teri galiyun pe aie watan kie Jahaan
Chali hai rasm ki koi na sari utha ke chalie.
I didn’t know Mr Gayoor personally until 2001 when I got the opportunity to see him during my posting in Maraaz. The more I learned him the much eager I was to study his thought: How was his approach to issues of topical importance to different aspects of our social life. Late Mr Gayoor apart of being an educator and social activist was also a political thinker who had his approach and methodology in solving the problems of life of the downtrodden. This was the reason of his mercurial behaviour. Wherever & whenever he would find that political and social group emerge, he would tend to associate himself with them just to do something for the common man and he didn’t hesitate in bidding goodbye to it: thus endangered his own career, consciously. He was one among the common folk who lived his life in the most modest way and never thought about having personal benefits or comforts of life as he couldn’t compromise his conviction with material benefits. This is not only reflected in his prose & poetry but also in the columns of newspapers. Coming from a religious family of Andrabi Syeds’, Mr Gayoor had thoroughly studied Islam and poets like Jami & Iqbal, and he often reflected their works in his poetry. His many poetic compilations directly find the context from Iqbal’s “Az Khawbe Giraan Khiez”.
Late Gayoor possessed a multi faceted personality who was a rare combination of human virtues: an author, poet , critic , intellectual, political analyst , a social activist and above all a very good human being. He will be remembered for many years to come for his excellent qualities of head and heart. We at the Gayoor Foundation have resolved to carry forward his mission in a very apolitical endurance. It would give us a great sense of satisfaction if we will would be able to come to the expectations of his admirers to the least. Khuda Rehmat kunad aan aashqanei pak teenat ra.
His Naats give the scale of enormous love he had for Prophet of Islam (SAW) . This year his anniversary was observed when Eid Milad un Nabi (SAW) is to celebrate few days later and I thought it proper to include few lines of his Naat in this write up.
