KVK Bandipora harvests first crop of Basmati Rice, SR4

Bandipora: Krishi Vigyaan Kendra (KVK) Bandipora Saturday harvested its first crop of Basmati rice (scented rice) and SR-4.
In this connection a grand function was organized and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Bandipora, Zahoor Ahmad Mir was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
The ADC on the occasion congratulated the scientists of KVK for successfully cultivating the new varieties of rice spread over 200 Kanals of land in Patushai here.
He said cultivation of these varieties will help in increasing the production and subsequent income of the farmers of the district and applauded the efforts of KVK for utilizing the land in a proper way. He urged the concerned to conduct intensive awareness programs for farmers to apprise them about latest technology.
Mir said the KVK is always trying to help the farmers in terms of enhancement of their production and productivity besides guiding them to adopt such crops and commodities as would enhance their source of livelihood.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Scientist Peerzada Shafat Hussain Dewani informed the participants that the Basmati Rice yields three quintals per Kanal while the Shalimar Rice-4 (SR4) yields four quintals per Kanal.
Dewani stated that the centre has provided employment to the local populace besides giving hand on training to the farmers in using new scientific techniques for farming.
He said KVK mulls to provide vermi-compost to farmers at subsidized rates
Among others Chief Scientist KVK Bandipora Dr Peerzada Shafat Hussain Dewani, scientists Dr Tariq Sultan (agronomy), Dr Hilal Ahmad Malik (agriculture extension), Dr Tahir Saleem (Vegetable Science), Dr Nazir Ahmad Mir (Animal Science) and Dr MS Tramboo (Forestry) besides District Officers of allied departments were present on the occasion.
