Ang: Suspected militants on Monday shot dead a Congress Sarpanch in Lukbawan Larkipora area of Anantnag district, officials said.
A senior police officer said that militants fired at Ajay Pandita, who is a Sarpanch of Lokbowan Halqa, son of Warka Nath Koul, leaving him seriously wounded.
“He was taken to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag for treatment,” he said, adding that “soon after reaching the hospital, the Sarpanch was declared brought dead. The deceased was associated with Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC)”.
Principal GMC Anantnag Dr. Showkat Jeelani said Pandita was declared brought dead. Meanwhile, the area has been cordoned off to nab the attackers.
Moreover, JKPCC strongly condemned the killing of its party Sarpanch and demanded stern action against the killers.
The party in a statement issued on Monday described the killing of Ajay Bharti as mindless and shameful act and demanded exemplary punishment against those behind the killing of Bharti.
Expressing anguish over the attack on Party Sarpanch Ajay Bharti leading to his death in Anantnag, the JKPCC has strongly condemned the killing, describing it mindless and shameful act on the part of killers.
The party has demanded judicial enquiry into the killing of Ajay Bharti to fix responsibility. The deceased Ajay Bharti apprehending attack on his life had written to Govt for security cover, which was reportedly denied to him. As a result Bharti lost his life in a gruesome attack, PCC said.
JKPCC described the killing of Ajay Bharti as a big loss to Congress Party and conveyed deepest condolences to bereaved family.
The party has demanded adequate security cover to Panchs, Sarpanchs, BDC Chairmen and other leaders to ensure safety of their lives and family
