Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday wrote to PM Modi to seek allowing Sharda Peeth pilgrimage in Pakistan-administered-Kashmir (PaK).
“Wrote to PM @narendramodi for opening of Sharda Peeth route for facilitating the Pandit community. I hope like Kartarpur, this too will be considered for better peace & prosperity in the region,” Mufti said, in a tweet. In the letter, shared by the PDP on Twitter, Mehbooba told Modi that Sharda Peeth is an outstanding relic of Kashmir’s history.
“Though it generally connects people here with their cultural and intellectual roots, for the Kashmiri Pandits it is an important place of pilgrimage which was frequented by them till Independence. Their urge to open it to pilgrimage has been projected ever since reopening of Srinagar-Muzaffarabad route,” she said, in the letter.
She said Kartarpur corridor, which was opened between India and Pakistan this week, has encouraged the Pandit community to see a possibility of pilgrimage to Sharda Peeth.
“Pandits fighting for opening of Sharda Peeth pilgrimage met me the other day to press for pleading the case with you.”
