New Delhi: The Supreme Court said it would continue hearing on September 12, Tuesday, a plea filed by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashwini Upadhyay and others, seeking a lifetime ban from contesting elections on parliamentarians and state MLAs, convicted for heinous offences.
Petitioners arguments, a division bench held, were inconclusive today.
The bench, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi and also comprising Justice Navin Sinha, heard at length various petitioners and interveners in the case.
It observed that it would be better if the cases against those parliamentarians and Members of Legislative Assemblies, indicted for serious offences, be fast tracked and finished expeditiously preferably within six months.
Rupinder Singh Suri, Supreme Court Bar Association President, appeared for one of the petitioners, Prashant Kumar Umrao.
